Rotronics Systems Cue Director and UMD System
Cue directors are those useful ‘behind the
scenes’ parts of a studio that ensure that the cameramen,
directors and others are informed as to the operational status
of your studio or OB truck.
They accept information from the studio
vision mixer and associated routing equipment and do the mundane
but essential tasks of lighting ‘ON AIR’ lights on the cameras,
sending information to text displays associated with the picture
monitors (UMD’s), and providing interlock information to video
players / servers to prevent them being manually controlled when
live to air.

ON-CUE,
Rotronics Cue Director, is designed to accept information either
via serial connection from Vision mixers and Matricies from a
number of different manufacturers, or via GPI hardware tallies
from DC contacts if necessary. The system will then output to
serial UMD’s or on-screen information text to multi-screen
viewers, and provide switching information for camera channels
to light the red cue lights and other interlock, trigger or
enable requirements.
Each 1RU Cue rack has a 10baseT IP
connection, and a two serial connections, with a set of card
slots that can accept either relay boards for output or opto-coupler
isolated boards for input. Several racks can be interconnected
via the IP connection and standard computer hubs. A specially
developed GUI allows control and store of setup.
Rotronics manufacture 12 character and 16
character LED UMD modules to accompany the Cue system. These are
unique in that they are only 10mm deep and can be conveniently
fitted in front of the controls on standard monitors, maximising
the space in the monitor stack. There is a 2RU rack accompanying
the UMD system to provide power and serial interface to ProBel
and other UMD drive protocols. This rack may be linked into the
main On-Cue system by the incorporated IP connection, and will
power up to 22 display modules from its dual mains connections.

Future Developments
Rosetta is our new universal interface (or
translation ) unit, offering IP connection to two serial ports
where space is at a premium. This unit is in a 240 mm x 110mm
case with external powering.
IP control of our remote camera systems is
now nearly complete. Work done for BBC News had the requirement
to route camera control over ‘Reith’, the BBC’s own system and
we built a system in Central London using control and video over
IP.
Rotronics Systems Limited
now offer a scalable cue director system.
The
interface to this is via a virtual patch panel.

Simple point and click control is featured, with the ability to
change the logic functionality of the cross-points.
Mixer labels can be changed via the virtual patch panel, as can the
UMD labels.
The
status can be viewed on the patch panel in real time, so changes
made on mixers, matricies or via the GPI system are seen on the
screen as they happen.
The
cross-point set-up can be saved. This allows a set-up for a
particular production to be recalled thus saving time.
Designed to interface to the
UMD system, and Vision Mixers, Matricies, and a range of isolated GPI input and output interface
racks, this system is scalable to suit a variety of users, either
Studios or OB trucks.
